This looks interesting, although could they not have put together a much lower grade single PDF, or even an OCRd text? (I know this is a regular whine.)

I work with converting scans to PDFs a lot at work. The PDF format itself is the barrier to small file sizes. Looking at the number of pages they’ve actually done a pretty good job.

One program that can perform miracles with scans, though it requires some work, is unpaper. I’m working on a GUI for it, though other concerns have put it on the back burner the moment. But its usually possible to combine that with a decent OCR (Abby is probably the best, but there are some okay open source ones) to create a good quality readable and searchable PDF.
